What is Structured Support?

Structured Support

Structured support is a psychosocial approach recommended in the UK Clinical Guidelines for Alcohol Treatment. It is a planned intervention grounded in clinical formulation. It focuses on core elements common to effective psychosocial interventions for addiction problems. Key components include building a strong therapeutic relationship, collaborative goal setting, supporting behavioural change and alternative rewarding activities, strengthening recovery‑supportive social networks, and developing coping skills and confidence to support recovery.
